Awards

Cynthia Coale (Board Member):
Passionate best describes the recipient of our “Outstanding Contributions by a Board Member” Award. She brings much to the discussion with her service on the Design Committee, but the passion really kicks into high gear when it comes to her work on the “Friends of the Palace” Committee. Please join me in honoring Cynthia Coale as we bestow upon her the “Doctor Livingston I Presume” Award.

Deni Lee (Volunteer):
The Main Street Program is fortunate to have many outstanding volunteers; all of whom play such an important roll with so many of our events and activities… we’d be lost without them. For their service we give many thanks. Each year we recognize one of these amazing volunteers; the one who has gone that extra mile. This year we pay tribute to Deni Lee.
If you’ve ever bellied-up to one of our Main Street bars, be it at Comedy Alley or Sundays in the Park, you’ve likely been greeted by Deni. No instruction needed; her and her “crew” have this gig down to a science. In the spirit of our jungle theme, we present to Deni the “Me Tarzan, You Jane” Award for Volunteer of the year.

KWiNE & Max Radio (Mike Spencer Accepting):
Spreadin’ the word is essential to a successful event and when it comes to getting’ the word out KWiNE & Max Radio pull out all the stops. If someone doesn’t hear about one of our events they have to be living in a cave, because Mike Spencer sees to it that the airways are blanked with radio ads and announcements informing the public of our many events and letting everyone know of what all we do. For this incredible In-Kind Contribution we present the “Out of Africa” Sponsorship Award to KWiNE & Max radio.

Eagle Distributing (Michelle Gagney Accepting):
Event sponsors are the financial backbone of any given event; they are non-profit organization’s best friend. They no doubt benefit such organizations, but they also benefit the general public. Businesses who are philanthropic realize there is a simpatico relationship with the community in which they do business. As is the case with our volunteers, the Main Street Program also has many generous sponsors who make possible the array of events and activities we produce and host... To each of those sponsors we say thank you. To Eagle Distributing, whose head was slightly above the rest, we wish to present you with the “Gorillas in the Mist” Award to recognize you as our Financial Sponsor of the Year or should I say “this Bud’s for you”.

Savings Bank of Mendocino County (Katie Kight Accepting):
The Savings Bank of Mendocino County is the very epitome of a community minded business. This is not only evident in their high level of customer service; it is also apparent in their support of a seemingly infinite number of community groups and organizations... Too include the Ukiah Main Street Program and its host of projects, activities and events. In addition, their presence on School Street is a vital anchor to the daily commerce of the Downtown District. For these reasons, and others, the Savings Bank has been voted Service Business of the Year, which makes them the “King of the Jungle”.

Ukiah Brewing Company (Bret Cooperrider Accepting):
Bret Cooperrider and his business embody everything the Ukiah Main Street Program is trying to achieve for the downtown.  He's open seven days a week, provides live entertainment and nightlife; featuring local artists, local organic food and organic beer. He creates a high quality product onsite, utilizes and maintains a historic building, contributes to the community, and actively serves on the Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors. With credentials like that it is no wonder that the Ukiah Brewing Company has been voted the Retail Business of the Year and is therefore the recipient of “The Lion King” Award.

Bella Capelli Salon & Spa (Niki, Erin & James Accepting):
There’s a new cat lurking in the downtown jungle and this cat has keen senses. With its inviting atmosphere, this business strives to give a modern twist to their establishment on School Street. They have a high level of experience and are dedicated to revolutionizing the standards of service with their industry... I am of course referring to Bella Capelli Salon & Spa and owners Niki Caravello, Erin Dehal and James Milligan. The word on the street is Bella Capelli’s pampers your body and relaxes your mind and makes you look marvelous in the process, so that makes them our choice for New Business of the Year and the recipient of the “Simba’s Pride” Award.

Katie Merz & Kerry Randall (City of Ukiah):
Anytime you go on safari you need a good guide, because it’s a jungle out there, and some of the thickest parts of the jungle are located near City Hall. Sometimes a good sharp machete isn’t enough to cut your way through; that’s when one or even two safari guides come in handy, as they know alternate ways through the jungle. The safari guides also know how to communicate with the local natives to avoid having them throw spears at you. Of course you want to do right by your safari guides, so the Main Street hunting party wants to thank their safari guides by presenting them with a special award. However, don’t take their picture, as they believe it will capture their soul. Please join us in this native ritual as we present Katie Merz and Kerry Randall with the “Runnin’ Through the Jungle” Award.

Jennie Stevens of Joey’s Salon :
When it comes to selecting the recipient of the “Spirit of Main Street” Award certain criteria comes into play, because as the award implies the recipient must exemplify its meaning. Our choice for this year’s recipient understands the concept of the Main Street Program, understands the benefits of the program and, more importantly, she participates in the activities of the program. In doing so she realizes that not only will her business benefit, but so will the downtown and so will the community at large. This year’s “Spirit of Main Street” Award goes to Jennie Stevens of Joey’s Salon.
