The Ukiah Main Street Program is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. The UMSP operates primarily to further the following three purposes:

1. Lessen the burdens of the government through public improvement

activities;

2. Combat community deterioration by preserving the historic character of

the downtown commercial area; and

3. Educate the public about the architecture and history of the area.

 

Our Mission is to preserve and enhance what makes Ukiah a great place. We envision the heart of Ukiah being the economic and cultural center of a thriving small town community. We pursue this vision through: promotion, partnership, education, economic development, advocacy, preservation and beautification.

 

We produce most of the events downtown, Taste of Downtown, Holidays in Ukiah a Perfect Pear, Comedy Alley, Downtown Trick or Treat, Santa’s Workshop, and our new event the upcoming Girls Night Out. In order to program our downtown with events year round we co-produce or sponsor the Holiday Trolley, Saturday Farmers Market, Moonlight Movie Madness and the Ukiah Country Pumpkinfest. These events bring thousands of people downtown, many of which return later to shop, eat at restaurants etc.

 

Plus, we plant flowers, weed and clean planters, tell downtown’s history, maintain a downtown rental database, a website www.downtownukiah.com, a downtown shopping and dining guide, we coordinate window contests, give business awards, host workshops, act as liaison between local businesses and governmental agencies, assist businesses with façade improvements and we publish a quarterly newsletter the Street Beat. Our goal is to bring people downtown to make downtown a viable commercial and social center, which in turn helps the economy of the entire community.

 

Communities identify with their downtowns. Downtowns are the first and strongest impression visitors get of a community. A vital downtown creates and retains jobs, it increases the tax base and serves as a focal point of community pride. These factors also influence personal and corporate decisions to locate in the community, all of which increase the quality of life in the area.

 

Volunteers and sponsors are the life blood of the Ukiah Main Street Program; they are “Team Main Street”. Would you like to help us make a difference? We need people like you to donate time, energy, and experience in a variety of areas, including database management, office administration, image campaign creation, party/event planning, and more. Our volunteers say they feel rewarded many times over for the help they provide in making a difference in our community.
